How Gelagen Works, Nutrient By Nutrient
Where thirteen nutrients go after you swallow them, which layer of skin they reach, and the point at which the argument stops.
The skin you can see is not alive
That sounds unkind and it happens to be accurate. The stratum corneum, the outermost layer, consists of flattened cells that finished their working lives and are now held together by a mortar of lipids. They do a genuinely important job as a barrier, and they are on their way off you at a rate of roughly forty thousand an hour.
The living part sits underneath. New cells are born at the base of the epidermis and migrate upward, changing as they travel, until they reach the top and flake away. That production line is what a swallowed nutrient can reach and a cream cannot.
What each part of the panel is doing down there
Copying the DNA
Folate and vitamin B12. A cell about to divide must first duplicate its entire genome, and folate carries the single carbon atoms that duplicate is written with while B12 regenerates folate after each handover. Neither works properly without the other. The basal layer of your skin runs that pair harder than nearly any tissue you own.
Building the protein
Biotin activates five carboxylase enzymes sitting at the junctions where fats and amino acids are handled, and keratin — the protein a hair shaft and a nail plate are made of — is assembled from amino acids. That is how a B vitamin ends up upstream of a fingernail.
Holding the structure together
Vitamin C. Two enzymes, prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase, modify specific residues inside a newly made collagen strand so that three strands can twist into a stable helix. Both enzymes require vitamin C. Without it the helix forms badly and falls apart, which is precisely what scurvy is.
Deciding what a cell becomes
Vitamin A. Its active end product binds receptors sitting directly on DNA and switches whole gene programmes on and off, governing how a keratinocyte matures on its way up. Every prescription retinoid in dermatology works on that same receptor system.
Protecting what is already built
Vitamin E and vitamin C. One sits inside cell membranes intercepting the chain reactions that damage lipids; the other works in the watery compartments and, usefully, regenerates the first one after it has taken a hit. They are an antioxidant pair rather than two separate ideas.
Running the enzymes
Zinc. Several hundred enzymes and a large family of gene-regulating proteins require a zinc atom to hold their shape. It has the longest dermatological track record of anything on this panel except vitamin A.
The route, timed

The honest boundary of all this
Everything above describes a requirement, not an effect. It establishes that your skin cannot be built without these nutrients. It does not establish that extra amounts improve skin which already has enough of them. Those are different claims and the second one is far weaker. Every nutrient page here says where its own entry sits on that line, and several conclude the case for supplementing is thinner than the advertising.
There is also a category of things this mechanism simply cannot touch. Ultraviolet damage, for one: UVA passes through window glass, reaches the dermis and degrades collagen and elastin, and it accounts for most visible facial ageing. Genetics. Hormonal change. Any diagnosed skin disease. A supplement supports a process; it does not overrule the forces acting on that process from outside.
About The Mechanism
How does a swallowed nutrient reach skin?
Through the bloodstream, to the basal layer of the epidermis where new cells are made. It never touches the surface you can see, because that layer is already dead.
Why does it take weeks?
The cells being supported today do not reach the surface for four to six weeks. That travel time is fixed and no product shortens it.
Should I take it with food?
Just before a meal works well. Four of the thirteen are fat soluble, so some fat in the meal that follows improves how much you actually absorb.
Is a gummy absorbed as well as a tablet?
For these nutrients there is no meaningful difference, and chewing arguably starts the release earlier. The variable that matters is whether you take it at all.
Does it work the same way on hair and nails?
Same nutrients, different tissue, different clock. Nails change first because new growth appears as a line you can literally point at.
